Predicting the self-lensing population in optical surveys

چکیده

The vast majority of binaries containing a compact object and regular star spend most their time in quiescent state where no strong interactions occur between components. Detection these is extremely challenging only few candidates have been detected through optical spectroscopy. Self-lensing represents new means detecting objects binaries, gravitational lensing the light from visible component by produces periodic flares. Here we show that current planned large-area surveys can detect significant number ($\sim 100$-$10,000$s) self-lensing provide insights into properties lenses. We many predicted population observable will be observed with multiple flares; this both improves chances detection also immediately distinguishes them chance-alignment micro-lensing events. Through investigate long - but previously hidden stages binary evolution consequently constraints on evolutionary models which impact nature double mergers.

Mining Weak Lensing Surveys

We present a survey of the cosmological applications of the next generation of weak lensing surveys, paying special attention to the computational challenges presented by the number of galaxies, N gal ∼ 10 5. We focus on optimal methods with no pixelization and derive a multigrid P 3 M algorithm that performs the relevant computations in O(N gal log N gal) time. We test the algorithm by studyin...

Cosmology with weak lensing surveys.

Weak gravitational lensing is responsible for the shearing and magnification of the images of high-redshift sources due to the presence of intervening mass. Since the lensing effects arise from deflections of the light rays due to fluctuations of the gravitational potential, they can be directly related to the underlying density field of the large-scale structures. Weak gravitational surveys ar...

Gravitational lensing in galaxy redshift surveys

Gravitationally-lensed quasars are both valuable (individually and statistically) and rare. They are mostly discovered through time-consuming re-imaging of known quasars, but can also be found spectroscopically in galaxy redshift surveys. Q 2237+0305 (Huchra et al. 1985) was found in this manner, but remains the only such discovery. Kochanek (1992) predicted that ∼ 1 in 10 redshifts would yield...

Cluster detection in weak lensing surveys

We present an efficient and robust approach for extracting clusters of galaxies from weak lensing survey data and measuring their properties. We use simple, physically-motivated cluster models appropriate for such sparse, noisy data, and incorporate our knowledge of the cluster mass function to optimise the detection of low-mass objects. Despite the method’s non-linear nature, we are able to se...

Shear calibration biases in weak lensing surveys

We investigate biases induced by the conversion between the observed image shape to shear distortion in current weak lensing analysis methods. Such overall calibration biases cannot be detected by the standard tests such as E/B decomposition or calibration with stars. We find that the non-Gaussianity of point spread function has a significant effect and can lead to up to 15 per cent error on th...
